Hobo Radio 558 – The last Blockbuster

Joel Murphy and Lars Periwinkle discuss a number of nostalgic faves looking to reinvent themselves; namely the last Blockbuster video store, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Blazing Saddles.

The last Blockbuster announced plans to rent itself out for sleepovers. The Fresh Prince is getting its own gritty reboot. And Blazing Saddles is set to become an animated film with talking cats and dogs. Joel and Lars try to make sense of these updates on this week’s show.

This week’s music:

  • Intro – “Giddy Up” by Tahuna Breaks
  • End – “A 2nd Devil” by Toussaint Morrison

From 1990 to 1996, Karyn Parsons could be seen playing Hillary, the socialite eldest daughter of the Banks family on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Through syndication and streaming services, the show remains popular to this day.

We talked to Parsons about Fresh Prince‘s legacy, the recent virtual cast reunion and how the late, great James Avery really was like a father to her.

She also talks about Sweet Blackberry, the nonprofit she formed “to bring little known stories of African American achievement to children everywhere.” The organization has told the stories of Henry “Box” Brown, Garret Morgan, Janet Collins and Bessie Coleman using narrators Alfre Woodard, Queen Latifah, Chris Rock and Laurence Fishburne. Parsons is hoping to create more videos and books.

This week’s music:

  • Intro – “Giddy Up” by Tahuna Breaks
  • Interstitial – “Vishnu Meets Funk” and “Ancient Ritual” by Lucas Perný & Miloslav Kollar
  • End – “I’m Into It” by Toussaint Morrison
