Silver Linings Playback 223 – Caligula: The Ultimate Cut

Before diving into Nicolas Cage Month, Joel and Andy are taking a brief interlude to discuss one of the most infamous films ever made … Caligula.

The film, which boasted a script from acclaimed writer Gore Vidal and an impressive cast that included Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren, Peter O’Toole and John Gielgud. was shot in 1976, but wasn’t released in theaters until 1979.

Penthouse Magazine founder Bob Guccione edited the final cut; splicing in hardcore pornography. Most of those involved distanced themselves from the project.

Now, a newly remastered and edited “Ultimate Cut” hopes to restore the film to its original vision. Joel and Andy watch the new cut to find its silver linings.
