Hobo Radio 588 – Shouldn’t it be Revenge of the Sixth?

May the 4th has become a Star Wars celebration day. So Joel Murphy and Lars Periwinkle spend May the 6th looking at the state of Star Wars films. They question Disney’s decision to fire Phil Lord and Christopher Miller from Solo, considering how well they did with Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse and The Mitchells vs. The Machines, and wonder if Disney is too afraid to do anything original with the franchise.

They also weigh in on Joyce Carol Oates’ criticism of Mad Men and share some thoughts on The Sopranos.

Hobo Radio Interview – Top Chef’s Jamie Tran

The past year has been an incredibly difficult one for restaurant owners. Many have struggled to stay open and to stay financially solvent during a global pandemic.

This struggle is front and center in season 18 of Bravo’s Top Chef. It was also the motivating factor for Jamie Tran, chef and owner of Las Vegas’ The Black Sheep, to compete on the show.

We talked to Jamie about her path to becoming a chef, her restaurant’s struggles during Covid and what it’s like competing on Top Chef.

Hobo Radio 587 – The Oscars aren’t good, everybody: HoboTrashcan’s Guide to the 2021 Academy Awards

Joel Murphy and Lars Periwinkle are joined once again by Molly Regan to share their thoughts on every major category in the 93rd annual Academy Awards ceremony (including all of the ones they definitely aren’t qualified to discuss, like cinematography).

It’s been a strange year for movies. With studios holding back on releasing their biggest films, there is a field full of unlikely contenders this time around. Will Hollywood take some chances and reward people they’d normally overlook? Probably not. But you’re going to watch anyway, so you might as well hype yourself up by listening to this extra-long episode.

Hobo Radio 586 – X always gave it to ya

Joel Murphy and Lars Periwinkle remember the life of the truly one of a kind rap icon DMX.

DMX has come up a number of times before on the show, so they also revisit two of those times – 1.) Hobo Radio 332, where they discussed the phrase “Twice as butt” from “Where The Hood At?” and 2.) Joel’s interview with Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, where they explained how getting the rights to “X Got’ Give It To Ya” was like an episode of Law and Order.

They also vent their frustrations with Netflix canceling shows prematurely and the Arclight Theaters closing.

This week’s music:

  • Intro – “Giddy Up” by Tahuna Breaks
  • End – “X Gon’ Give It To Ya/No Diggity (Acoustic Mash-Up)” by Steven Smith
