Hobo Radio 543 – We could not be further away

Subscribe:

Since the last time Joel Murphy and Lars Periwinkle recorded a show together, daily life has descended into chaos. They try to make sense of this new COVID-19 quarantine world on this week’s show.

They take a look at the state of wrestling (which is somehow still producing new shows), share what they’ve been binging and out each other’s HBO GO guilty pleasures (which include Hobbes and Shaw and Detective Pikachu.) Also, in these dark times, Joel turned to Fred Stoller.

This week’s music:

  • Intro – “Giddy Up” by Tahuna Breaks
  • End – “Trapped” by Kellee Maize

Hobo Radio Interview – Peter Diseth from Better Call Saul

Subscribe:

The tragedy of Better Call Saul is that we know going in that our protagonist’s fate is sealed. As much as we may empathize with and root for Jimmy McGill, we know that he is destined to end up being the Saul Goodman we watched in Breaking Bad (and eventually, the Gene Takavic we see glimpses of in Better Call Saul).

But perhaps, if things had gone a different way, Jimmy could have turned out like Bill Oakley, the trans fat loving, “petty with a prior” spouting deputy district attorney that serves as a foil for McGill on BCS.

We explore this alternate universe Jimmy with Peter Diseth, the actor who plays Oakley. We also discuss how he landed the role (which included an awkward bathroom encounter with Bob Odenkirk), what it’s like being a day player on TV shows and how hard it is to eat food take after take in a scene.

This week’s music:

  • Intro – “Giddy Up” by Tahuna Breaks
  • Interstitial – “Vishnu Meets Funk,” “Give It (All Night Long” and “Ancient Ritual” by Lucas Perný & Miloslav Kollar
  • End – “El Sonido de la Vida” by Silva de Alegria

They also remember the late, great James Lipton from Inside the Actors’ Studio.

This week, Joel Murphy and Lars Periwinkle share their thoughts on the 92nd annual Academy Awards, which were held this past Sunday. After voicing their disappointment over underwhelming slate of nominees on a recent show (including snubs for things like The Farewell, Knives Out, Midsommar, female directors in general and all of the actors in Parasite), they were pleasantly surprised to discover the Academy was shamed into actually picking the best nominees this year. Joel also shares his thoughts on all nine Best Picture nominees, which he and Molly recently finished watching.
