Hobo Radio Interview – James Ward Byrkit (Shatter Belt)

Since we first spoke with James Ward Byrkit in 2014, his brilliant sci-fi film Coherence has continued to grow its cult following. Now, he’s looking to tackle his next mind-bending indie project, Shatter Belt, an anthology series in the same vein as The Twilight Zone or Black Mirror.

According to the Kickstarter:

The connecting theme is consciousness— the mysteries sounding awareness, intention, desire, and free will, in a time of disruption and recalibration. Each episode is self-contained, exploring the uncanny nature of consciousness in intimate, emotionally grounded stories.

We talked to Byrkit about his plans for the series, his decision to crowdfund it and the episode he’s already filmed with guest star Patton Oswalt.

  • Interstitial – “Vishnu Meets Funk” and “Ancient Ritual” by Lucas Perný & Miloslav Kollar
  • End – “My Baby’s Love (Is Like the Sun)” by Monkey Mind

Hobo Radio 414 – Pube Detectives

Joel Murphy and Lars Periwinkle shake up the format of their show, embracing the current trend in podcasting. They become amateur investigators looking into a case that no one else has been able to solve – the mystery of which A-list celebrity Alia Shawkat had weird sex with.

They also get to the bottom of whether or not Ric Flair hooked up with Halle Berry. And Joel tries to get to the bottom of why Lars has no memory of a screening of Coherence that HoboTrashcan tried to make happen two years ago.

Why doesn’t Lars remember the HoboTrashcan interviews with Coherence director James Ward Byrkit and stars Emily Baldoni and Maury Sterling? What “smokey-eyed” celebrity shaved Alia Shawkat’s pubes at a party? Did Halle Berry ride Space Mountain?

The answers to these questions and more are in this week’s podcast.

This week’s music:

  • Intro – “Giddy Up” by Tahuna Breaks
  • End – “Rain (Acoustic)” by Wildlight

Hobo Radio 320 – Coherence’s James Ward Byrkit and Maury Sterling

Last Thursday, we announced that HoboTrashcan is hosting a Gathr screening of the award-winning indie film Coherence in Baltimore at the Landmark Harbor East on Oct. 23. But to make the screening happen, we have to presell 90 tickets in the next two weeks. (Gathr works like Kickstarter – if the ticket goal isn’t reached, the screening doesn’t happen and everyone who bought a ticket isn’t charged.)

To promote this screening, and the film itself, we present a special Hobo Radio podcast this week featuring interviews with the film’s co-writer and director James Ward Byrkit and star Maury Sterling.

What’s it like making a high concept, highly-improvised sci-fi film on a small budget? What drew Byrkit and Sterling to the project? What happened at the horse trailer? The answers to these questions and more are in this week’s podcast.

If you like the show, please help spread the word and buy tickets to the screening here:

  • Intro – “Giddy Up” by Tahuna Breaks
  • Interstitial – “The Ring” and “Butterfly Lament” by Peacock Ball
  • End – “Thousand Faces” by Matt Montez
