Hobo Radio 557 – Expert Emmy analysis

Subscribe:

The 72nd Primetime Emmy Award nominations have been announced and they are up to their old shenanigans. There are some notable snubs (like Rhea Seehorn from Better Call Saul), a few surprises (like The Mandalorian) and a lot of predictable nonsense (like their undying love for Ozark).

Joel Murphy and Lars Periwinkle try to make sense of the Emmy nominations; analyzing the highs and the lows.

This week’s music:

  • Intro – “Giddy Up” by Tahuna Breaks
  • End – “Break Your Fall” by The Sidleys

Hobo Radio Interview – Cody Heller

Subscribe:

As a child, Cody Heller watched her mother Randee Heller, who starred as Lucille LaRusso in The Karate Kid, go through the ups and downs of being a working actor. It made Cody want to be involved in the industry, but pushed her toward writing and directing.

Dummy, the semi-autobiographical comedy Heller created in which Anna Kendrick plays Cody, Donal Logue plays her fiancé Dan Harmon and Meredith Hagner plays Harmon’s sex doll, Barbara, who comes to life and forms an unlikely friendship with Cody, was released on Quibi earlier this year.

Heller talks to us about being Michael Bay’s assistant, the friendship she and her father formed with the sex workers at a Nevada brothel and what it’s like releasing a new show during a pandemic on a streaming platform that is being widely derided on social media.

This week’s music:

  • Intro – “Giddy Up” by Tahuna Breaks
  • Interstitial – “Vishnu Meets Funk” and “Ancient Ritual” by Lucas Perný & Miloslav Kollar
  • End – “You’re The Dummy” by Derek Clegg

Silver Linings Playback 1 – Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace

Subscribe:

All bad films have a silver lining.

At least, that’s the theory Joel Murphy and Andy McIntyre are hoping to prove in this new podcast. Murphy and McIntyre are revisiting maligned films and seeing what good they can find in them.

In their first episode, in honor of May the 4th, they are rewatching the first of George Lucas’ prequel films, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Andy maintains that it is somewhat unfairly disliked by Star Wars fans. Joel isn’t so sure. But together, they will find the film’s silver lining.

Theme Song: “Bankin'” by Bronson Scott
