Hobo Radio Interview – Vidiots Executive Director Maggie Mackay

Anyone who has searched in vain to find a classic film on their various streaming services only to discover it has vanished from the digital landscape completely knows the value of DVDs and VHS tapes.

Vidiots, a beloved LA video rental hub established in 1985, recently restructured itself into a 501(c)3 non-profit and opened a new space in Eagle Rock that has both a video store and a theater.

We spoke with Vidiots Executive Director Maggie Mackay about the challenges of running a video store in 2023, the importance of preserving and screening classic films and the organization’s recent partnership with Pluto TV to offer free film screenings.

Hobo Radio Interview – Kestrin Pantera

Kestrin Pantera has one of the coolest names ever.

She also has one of the coolest careers ever. As a classically-trained cellist, she has performed alongside Weezer, Beck and Brandi Carlile. Recently, she has been playing shows with David Wain and Ken Marino’s Middle Aged Dad Jam Band.

But her true passion is directing. Her latest film, Pretty Problems, is a funny and unpredictable exploration of wealth and privilege. After earning acclaim on the festival circuit, it is now available to watch on Hulu.

We talk to Kestrin about directing independent films, performing alongside Weird Al Yankovic and being raised by the also-amazingly-named Commander Pantera.

[This episode is being released during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, Pretty Problems wouldn’t exist.]

Hobo Radio 637 – The garbage will find you (ft. Sara Carson)

This week, Joel Murphy and Lars Periwinkle are joined by an old friend … Sara Carson.

Speaking of old, Joel, Lars and Sara discuss the various ways they have shunned modern technology and embraced a more analog lifestyle; including buying records and DVDs in 2023, avoiding setting up Threads accounts and using social media only to track food trucks.

And, for added measure, Lars tells how he threw his back out in the most unremarkable way.

Hobo Radio 636 – The worst sex scene in history

Joel Murphy and Lars Periwinkle discuss The Idol, which, according to GQ, gave us “the worst sex scene in history.” They play a clip from the scene in question and try to figure out if anyone in the show has ever actually had sex.

They also talk about Michael Keaton once again donning Batman’s cape and cowl.
